The march of progress has set us all on a path to meeting the internal IT consumer’s demands with more and more public cloud offerings. Traditional infrastructure and on-premises IT services are just not as attractive or easy to consume as public offerings. That trend isn’t going away. So, what can you do to keep getting value from your existing infrastructure while also offering public cloud? Make the internal process faster and bring public cloud under the IT purview with management and brokerage services.

Since you are reading this, you’re probably aware of the advantages a powerful cloud management platform like vRealize brings to the table: automation, orchestration, speed, agility and control. I’d like to share how a cloud brokerage solution can complement this.

The most common question I hear after “What is brokerage?” is “Why do I need a brokerage if I already have a cloud management platform like vRealize?” The answers to both these questions are incredibly relevant to IT executives who are focused on increasing agility and gaining full control of their IT infrastructure.

First, an IT brokerage services platform represents a new middle office — a function that focuses on the business of IT like sourcing, procurement, packaging and billing — in the IT supply chain. It takes all of the wonderful features of a cloud management platform and places them in a custom, unified catalog next to all of the other services the IT department provides for other business units. This partially answers the second question.

But why do you need brokerage services and cloud management together? It’s important to understand the value of planning for new IT services such as applications, PaaS, IaaS and SaaS. A full IT brokerage solution will provide the essential value of planning for where an application will be deployed, as well as how much it’ll cost to develop and operate it. The business intelligence gained from application planning will give you the missing insight as to whether or not an application or service should even be considered for creation and development.

IT brokerage services bring you business intelligence and a global catalog of services that includes what you’re consuming from your vRealize platform. Your line of business can choose from customized catalogs of services that are managed, governed and delivered through vRealize and a cloud brokerage soluton like IBM cloudMatrix.
